Hiring the wrong website designer will cost you thousands of dollars!
So how do you pick the right person?
Don’t be afraid to ask the website designer questions. You are going to have a long on-going relationship with this person so go in prepared! Do your research – find a website you like and ask the designer if he or she can create a website for your company like your example.
Ask for reference and examples of site they have completed with success. Make sure the designers examples don’t all look the same! What I mean is if every site is created the same but with different colors then I would say don’t walk away from the designer – RUN!
Is the designer listening to what you want or telling you what they can do?? Red flag – some people will try and sell you in their capabilities and not on what you want!
- Ask a business associate for referrals
Business associates can be a great reference for designers and maybe a better reference for who not to hire. Ask your business associate why the “type” of referral they are giving (good or bad). You don’t really want a referral that is a friend trying to do something on the side UNLESS the friend can provide examples and references. Then by all means set up a meeting and see what they have to offer! Freelancers can save you alot of money and usually provide quick, quality designs. Freelancers are not restricted to 8-5 Monday to Friday so they tend to work into the night and on weekends at no additional cost to you!!
Use your connections on Face Book or Linkedin. These are just too big of a source not to ask about a designer.
Okay, so you have to do some work before you start on finding website! First, do you own your own domain name? If so, do you have your own hosting? Most companies can set both of these up with little charge. You need to know what all you want the web designer to do for you. For example, you need a new website, hosting, e-mail blast, promotional pieces designed and more. Let the designer know this up front so they can tell you if they are the right person or not. If you have a logo, make sure you have a clean electronic version along with information you want to have on your site. Remember, you know the most about your company and what you want to say about it so here is your opportunity.
Your journey to create a new or redesign website should be easy, fun, and exciting to see the final project.
